JOHN BELL – LABOUR SCARMONGERING AT TAMESIDE COUNCIL MUST STOP

Tameside has escaped the worst of the cutbacks, as the Coalition Government works to clear up the financial mess left by the last disastrous Labour Government.

In the next two years, Tameside Council’s revenue spending power will be cut by just 6.21 per cent, the fourth lowest cut in Greater Manchester behind Bury, Stockport and Trafford.

The news was announced earlier this week by the Department for Communities & Local Government, and the settlement is better than expected, following the near bankruptcy of the country following Labour’s 13 years in power.

The settlement ends months of scaremongering by Tameside’s Labour-controlled council and local Labour politicians.

The news now gives Tameside Council the opportunity to cut waste from its operations and deliver the best services possible for its residents, safe in the knowledge that it has escaped the worst of the cuts that are the lasting legacy to the wasteful and wasted years of the last Labour government.

Cllr. John Bell, the Tameside Conservative Leader, said, “For months the scaremongering coming from Labour has verged on the hysterical. It has been unprofessional, immature and, frankly, dishonest.

“Nobody should forget it was Labour that took us to the verge of bankruptcy and it has been left to the Coalition Government to clear their mess up. And nobody should forget that Labour planned cuts of as much as 25 per cent had they won the General Election last May. Those Labour politicians that have been decrying the financial mess we’re in are clearly in denial about the mess their Party left us in.

“It is now time for Tameside Council to get to work eradicating waste and getting the best value for every single penny it spends. At the beginning of the financial year it had £36 million of taxpayers’ cash in reserves, where other councils barely have a penny, and it has a promise of financial aid from Government to help it freeze residents’ council tax for the next two years should it choose to do so. I therefore hope that the Labour council will pull its head out of the sand, stop scaremongering and get on with the job.”

  1. I quite agree. Labour’s hysterical ranting over cuts remind me of the alcoholic who can’t get served in a pub. Their ‘spend, spend, spend’ attitude of the last 13 years means the coalition has to ‘cut, cut, cut’. Where do Labour think we were going to find the money from?
